The planet Earth is our home. Sisters, Echo and Yoyo want to remind us to take care of our home. Each individuals’ choices and actions impact others. Yoyo sewed a garment designed after our Earth. Woven in are sensors and Flexi.Bits. Her crown uses servo motors to symbolize health through natural movements in nature. Echo is calling for us to care for our oceans by keeping it clean. Only with our care can amazing creatures like jelly fish and seahorses exist. Who is going to care for our home if we don’t?

Are villains just born bad? Maria’s piece is built around a villainous character she created. As with most villains, Maria feels her character is misunderstood, so she tries to be better understood by absorbing and controlling people’s emotions through her butterflies. In Maria’s entirely hand-crafted piece, her garment is the home to her villain’s butterflies with the ability to launch off the dress. With mentorship from M5Stack’s engineering team and tools, Maria created a series of servo motors connected into a circuit to launch rubber band wind-up butterflies. A seasoned maker and designer, Maria’s butterfly launchers made it on the professional runway at 2018 Shenzhen Fashion Tech Expo.

From the hat to the dress, much consideration was given in choosing the lighting to illuminate the ensemble. This team wants the world to know beautiful things can be made out of repurposed trash. Gracjana Siewert, age 16.
A MakeFashion Edu veteran, Grace wanted to derive her inspiration for her piece the opposite of her work last season: “This year on my inspiration derives from something opposite of last year. Last year my creation was very cute, pink and it included a lot of pink LEDs. This time my project will be dark, mixed with frustration and sadness.”
Inspired by the complex emotions involved in the the mythological Medusa, Grace weaves design and tech to bring forth feelings of despair and betrayal. In Roman mythology, Medusa was not always a monster. She was a young girl that was a devoted priestess of the goddess Athena. Athena, was always jealous of her beauty, especially Medusa’s long beautiful hair. Medusa’s beauty was so great that it garnered the unwanted attention of Poseidon. Athena, unable to contain her jealously turned Medusa into a monster and abandoned her. Utilizing her ever-advancing tech skills, Grace will conceive Pegasus, Medusa’s child, through projection and hologram on the runway.

Michelle loves unicorns because they bring happiness when she sees them. “They simply make me feel happy, I’m not sure why. What I hope, is that when people see what I’m wearing, my unicorn outfit, that they feel happy too. I’ll be able to see their smiles.”
Karen became fascinated with cats after watching the BBC documentary on them. Cats have distinct personalities and are very independent of spirit. Karen hopes everyone has an opportunity to be themselves.

Kiki Ye (13 years old)
Inspired by the tragedy masks from Chinese theatre that show two emotions- Kiki explored the concept more deeply to understand specific ideas or concepts attached to happiness and sadness. “I want to the changes in emotions in my dress. It’s a little hard to put into words, but I used a design board to help me work through what I mean by happiness and sadness.”
The dress itself is several levels, from white to black, showing how a person would move from one emotion to the other, depending on where they are in life.

A homeless kid lives on the sidewalk alone, he always has nightmare of zombies, Momo, even people being hanged to dead. He had to hide underground because he was so horrified and scared. One day he hatched a plan to conquer his fear, by making a hide-in-the dark robe with a sword and a shield, the sword can dice up the monsters, and the shield to blind them. The robe has a special power, it hides him like a chameleon. Because lots of kids are scared of the dark, Galen came up with this idea by using the blobs given by Ms. Claire. One looked like a robe so he turned it into this costume.

Students can be individually free, but coordinated in an effort towards a common goal. Both is important for a strong community. Each one of us has strengths to share. By sharing, it makes us strong, and that strength can be used for the good of the community.
This piece shows changes between a coordinated LED display, that everyone made together, and a chaotic LED display that everyone controlled individually. Showing that both can coexist and are beautiful.

With help from their older friends, kindergarten designed and created a piece to show that they understand rules exist for the community’s well-being and that we should all protect our friends by stand up to things that are not right.

Makers through and through, this constant trio is always looking to do something creative. While browsing Instructables.com one day, the girls came across a carousel costume by MarlenaT. This was it! “Carousels are popular all over the world, with all ages, and it’s because it lets us experience our imaginations!” exclaims Angela. Modernizing the traditional carousel, each one chose a theme that evoke their own imaginations: dessert, outer space, Alice in Wonderland. Wanting to show movement in their piece, the girls hacked wind-up toys and programmed servo motors to make sure carousel pieces twirl and spin. This team encourages all to find time to bring imagination to life!

“You are valuable,” is a simple message that 14-year-old Hayle wants to embed in everyone. Very aware of the turbulent times in how humans treat each other today, she wants all of us to slow down and think about the value of a human life and our own personal value. Inspired by Chelsea Klukas of Lumen Couture, Hayle is employing projection mapping onto her garment. Weaving in the ultrasound pictures of little brother when he was in the womb into the projections, she hopes we all stop to contemplate that “we are valuable.”

Aaron, fascinated by destruction brought about by humans, recreated a shield used by German forces during World War II. Andy, curious to see if tech will be weaponized in the future, created his version of an enhanced human ready for war. Their pieces include subtle hints of love, peace, and unity. Their message is simple, let’s fight but let’s fight for love.

A Dragon is Born | Shenzhen American International School

Once upon a makerspace, sitting on top of a pile of recycled materials was a cardboard box. A young maker strolled by and stopped to look at the box. Having a few minutes, the young maker transformed the nondescript cardboard box into the beginnings of a head with a kind face. As the days passed, so did the head with the kind face. As the students passed, the box grew, and started to take various forms. Looking more interesting, people started to add more to the creature from the pile of recycled materials. In time, a dragon was born.

Who doesn’t like video games? Parents perhaps. These two independent projects wanted to pay homage to all the learning that can be had through gaming. These boys believe that gaming has taught them skills that are valuable for their future such as design, strategy, coordination and collaboration with virtual strangers. While they understand the concerns parents may have with certain types of games and hours spent. They think at the core of it, it is a parenting issue on limitation and being aware of what their kids are doing. Our lives in the digital realm will only increase, parents need to know that completely disallowing tech will not help their children.
Lucas Li is a veteran maker, designer, and artist. For his work this season, he has started from scratch. Lucas created all the patterns and design files to hand craft his entire ensemble. His biggest take away- project management is hard and time is the biggest constraint to creativity.

The inspiration for this piece comes from two sources- The Five Element Theory based in Chinese philosophy. The Elements are: Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood; each has different properties, strengths and weaknesses, but when all elements meet, they complete each other and create something very powerful. The other inspiration were martial arts and the heroic characters portrayed in those stories. This piece originally started with the concept of each of team member creating a piece to resemble each element, only when the team formed were their superpowers indestructible. When one team member left China, the team decided create one piece to represent all of them- one costume containing all the elements- maintaining unity in their team and friendship. This team created the Elements Warrior (Wu Xing Warrior) who will possess the powers of all five elements. Thoughtful consideration was given to the fabrics, electronics, and other materials to illustrate the power of every element.

Winnie Gu (10)
Winnie loves her little pet parrot Mango. She has created a piece paying homage to all the love and joy her pet has given her. “Mango is beautiful with green and yellow feathers and he is very social.” Winnie spent much time “observing his behavior, the way he moves and interacts with other pets and other members of the family.” Her blue and green dress is a representation of a familiar environment for Mango. It represents the jungle or an exotic rainforest, livened with colorful lights representing exotic flowers and foliage. Winnie created something Mango would like if he lived in a forest.

“When I was small, I got a little stuffed toy: my white tiger. It’s quite small but it’s still my most favorite toy, even if I’m in third grade. Since I got my white tiger, I became more and more interested in the real animal, and now I have a small collection of white tiger toys and figures. I started to read a lot about white tigers, and learned how special and rare they are.” Inspired by white tigers, Amy has blue tiger stripes made of LED strips, ears and tail. Amy’s piece is a reminder for all of us to connect with the toys and inspirations from our youth.

Squashing Bullies | International School of Nanshan Shenzhen
Melody Chen, 10 years old
Flynn is an active boy who lives in Shenzhen. He loves to play squash and realized that there was a lot of bullying happening in a school. He didn’t want to be a bystander and wanted to stand up for other people, so he started to think of how he can use his wonderful power of playing squash to defend those bullies. He squashed those bullies. He came up with a theory in his mind like this: If you are kind, it’s the same as shooting a ball to a person, which is saying nice things to them. And when you say nice things to them, they will bounce the appreciation back to you, which can also bounce the ball back to you. But when you say offensive things or bully another person, you “shoot” a ball at them. That ball never comes back because the other person is sad and angry. The bully can never take the words back. The use of red and blue is to make him feel more powerful because these are his favorite colors. It also represents the stages of bullying because red means happiness and blue meaning sadness to me.
Flynn uses these methods to defend himself against bullies and also raise awareness by giving superhero speeches to students. After that there are less and less bullies in his school.

Students can be individually free, but coordinated in an effort towards a common goal. Both is important for a strong community. Each one of us has strengths to share. By sharing, it makes us strong, and that strength can be used for the good of the community.
This piece shows changes between a coordinated LED display, that everyone made together, and a chaotic LED display that everyone controlled individually. Showing that both can coexist and are beautiful.

Gaming Hat to Scare Monsters: Light saves the day! | International School of Nanshan Shenzhen

“I wanted to have a gaming helmet to have more light when playing games, so I can see the other players. When you are in the dark it will hurt your eyes and be a little bit scary, so it has to have more light. I was inspired by the game Clash of Clans, there is a character that uses bowling balls as a weapon. I am imagining what if those characters were real.” The piece represents the symbolism of protection with light in games.
“To make my costume, I first cut newspaper and glue the paper onto a balloon a layer at a time to make like a cardboard helmet (paper mache). I glued LED lights around my face to have light when I look down it will shine on the phone. This is the first time I used LED lights to make something. I just tried putting on the battery to turn on the LED lights at another place before.”
